In presence of the artist Jihei Murase
Tuesday-Friday, 6-9 December
Join us during our exhibition from Tuesday 6th December to Friday 9th December, where the artist Jihei Murase will be present at the gallery.
Jihei Murase is the third lacquer artist in his lineage to inherit the name Jihei. He also represents the 7th generation as base maker for lacquerware.
Murase's innovative approach to wood turning and his mastery of the Negoro style of lacquer decoration have made him a favourite of art collectors and his work is in the collections of the Victoria & Albert in London, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, among others.
Murase's affiliation with the tea ceremony is deeply connected with his knowledge of traditional techniques. Yet, the artist constantly transforms wood, inventing new and unique forms.
He performs every stage of the production himself, first selecting the wood, then turning the bases on the wheel freehand and finally applying the many layers of natural urushi lacquer. Murase also makes his own tools. He is a devoted practitioner of the Way of Tea, which informs his deep knowledge of tradition as well as his work.
