Our Connection to Japan

Stuart Lochhead Sculpture’s unique presence in today’s art market is deeply shaped by its connection to Japan, which is reflected in the gallery’s design on Old Bond Street, its annual presentation at TEFAF Maastricht, and its exhibitions of exciting contemporary Japanese artists.

This connection is led by gallery director Sophie Richard, a recognised expert on Japanese art and cultural institutions. Author of The Art Lover’s Guide to Japanese Museums (2014 & 2019), Sophie has lectured widely across Europe and Asia.

Sophie curates an annual exhibition of Japanese art at the gallery, and she exclusively represents the artist Shota Suzuki (b. 1987) in the UK and EU. Below is but a selection of the works she has selected for display in Old Bond Street.

SOPHIE RICHARD

DIRECTOR

A graduate from the Ecole du Louvre and the Sorbonne, Paris, Sophie Richard has worked for art dealers specialised in Old Masters in Paris, New York and London.

In parallel to her involvement with Stuart Lochhead Sculpture, a lifelong passion for Japan has led Sophie to write "The Art Lover's Guide to Japanese Museums", for which she received an award from the Japanese government in 2015. She consults on a variety of cultural projects in Japan and is an advisor to the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs.
