On the occasion of the opening edition of Studiolo, Stuart Lochhead Sculpture will present a focused two-object display, centred around two distinct themes: the international legacy of the Renaissance, and the representation of the grotesque through the use of unusual materials. A statuette of a Leaping Horse by the Florence-born, London-based Francesco Fanelli—produced at Charles I’s court—demonstrates Britain’s long-standing fascination with great Italian masters. Jean-Joseph Carries’ rare Mask instead brings together both French Gothic tradition and the influence of Japanese ceramics in France at the turn of the 20th century, at the intersection of the ‘applied’ and ‘high’ arts.
